Occassionally Birchbark has a litter of AKC Newfoundland puppies. We take great pride in our breedings, which has been built on years of experience, guidance from excellent Newfoundland mentors, quality pedigrees, champion and health-tested backgrounds. Prior to breeding any Newf, we show our dogs to AKC judges for assessment. Many go on to receive their championships, both here and in Canada. Evaluations on health is of paramount importance: hips, elbows, heart and cystinuria are basic screenings that should be completed on all Newfs. Careful evaluation is then considered for a litter. Pedigrees are lined up, temperaments are assessed, timing for top quality care is also a factor. A litter of Newf puppies require great stamina, as the whelping, and the first 3-4 weeks are intense. One must have the energy, time, and financial resources to whelp Newfoundlands. It is a labor of love, truly. We constantly continue to learn about the breed, and often attend seminars to further education.
If interested in a puppy from an upcoming litter, please email/call for more information. We care deeply about our puppies' future families, and attempt to match the right puppy to the right family. Many people are not set up for a Newf, or have the time for one, so these are all factors that must be considered. Giant breeds are also costly. We do require a contract, and puppies leave on AKC limited registration. If one is interested in showing/breeding, we insist on a coownership, plus additional requirements.
